God of Wonders

Last Wednesday night we were outside saying goodbye to dear friends who had come for a visit. Suddenly, Elizabeth exclaimed, "Look, look!" and pointed to the sky. We all looked up and witnessed an amazing sight: the total eclipse of the moon. A hush fell over us as we gazed upon that which declared the majesty and greatness of our God.

At church yesterday, we sang one of our favorite worship songs: God of Wonders.

God of wonders beyond our galaxy;
You are holy, holy.
The universe declares your majesty;
You are holy, holy.
Lord of heaven and earth.
Lord of heaven and earth.

"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork" (Psalm 19:1).

In The Pleasures of God John Piper writes, "The message of creation is this: there is a great God of glory and power and generosity behind all this awesome universe; you belong to him; he is patient with you in sustaining your rebellious life; turn and bank your hope on him and delight yourself in him, not his handiwork.

"Day pours forth the 'speech' of that message to all that will listen in the day, speaking with blindingly bright sun and blue sky and coulds and untold shapes and colors of all things visible. Night pours forth the knowledge of the same message to all who will listen at night, speaking with great dark voids and summer moons and countless stars and strange sounds and cool breezes and northern lights. Day and night are saying one thing: God is glorious! God is glorious! God is glorious!"

As I watched the eclipse I was reminded of the awesome truth that God spoke the universe into existence. He is Lord of heaven and earth, and nothing is too hard for Him. He knows not only the billions of stars by name, He also knows the number of hairs on my head. My fears turn to faith in His hands.

What marvelous work of God have you witnessed lately?

The affection of little children. The fellowship of the saints. The beautiful contrast of dark tree branches full of bright yellow leaves.

The weather yesterday was very cloudy and dark all afternoon, but when the sun was going down, I could see it behind the cloud cover, and it was giving off a beautiful glow to the clouds. I love the change of seasons!

The change of season has me reflecting on God's attention to the details and the interworking of all creation from the entire universe to the cell of a leaf. It reflects His power, His beauty, His wisdom, His creativity....AWESOME!

Thank you all for your thoughtful insights.

I wonder how many amazing things I miss each day because I'm rushing about checking off my to-do list? May we have eyes to see, ears to hear and hearts to sing. :-)

I have been complaining about insects lately, but God reminded me on Sunday that not all of them are bad. We saw a praying mantis on our truck tire. I tried to save it by getting it off the tire, but made it mad in the process. If you just look at them, their construction, they are amazing. Those who don't recognize a Creator really miss out on a lot of joy I think.
